UNIMER’s sustainability in all fields

Sustainable agriculture aims to preserve the environmental balance in the use of resources and production techniques, respects the environment, is economically viable for the farmer and is socially just by improving farmer and overall society well-being. Therefore, sustainable agriculture is relevant for the environment, for the economy and for the society.

UNIMER has always fostered sustainable agriculture, by pursuing the following objectives:

  • soil fertility and environmental resources preservation in the long run;
  • farmer’s profitability;
  • health and well-being protection of stakeholders, employees, sector operators and final consumers;

consistent with those of the EU Common Agricultural Policy and Green Deal that is declined in agriculture as Farm to Fork strategy:

  • build a sustainable food system;
  • implement a new biodiversity strategy;
  • contribute to the climate action plan;
  • implement an action plan to reduce pollution, protecting natural resources such as water, air and soil;

shared by the production and consumption model of Circular Economy, which is based on the principle of a virtuous and responsible recycling of residues, agricultural by-products and food waste. UNIMER has always followed those patterns in the production of its environmentally friendly fertilizers.

Soil fertility preservation

In agriculture, soils represent a limited resource that is barely renewable: it is necessary to keep high levels of fertility through the reintegration of the annual losses of humified organic matter. These are negatively affected by the intensification and specialization of modern agriculture, as well as climate change and biodiversity loss.

The achievement of the EU’s sustainable development goals, reflecting the SDG of the United Nations, heavily depends on the availability of healthy soils and on their sustainable exploitation. The administration of highly humified organic matrices allows the revitalization of soil humification processes, contributing to environmental sustainability.

Farmer’s profitability and respect of the environment

Sustainability also means to guardatee the farmers who choose UNIMER’s fertilizers excellent crops both qualitatively and quantitatively, fully satisfying the economic sustainability objectives of modern agriculture. This is the result of UNIMER fertilizers greater efficiency, which allows an increase of the assimilable share of nutrients by the crops, thus limiting the losses caused by the phenomena of leaching, precipitation, insolubility and evaporation. This also positively impacts the pollution of the underground aquifers and of the greenhouse gases production that agricultural activities directly and indirectly contribute to emit.

Stakeholder’s health and well-being protection

UNIMER has always nurtured lasting relationships of trust with its collaborators, by taking care of their health and well-being. The reconstruction of the Arquata del Tronto plant, destroyed by the 2016 earthquake, demonstrates how important is social sustainability to UNIMER. Indeed, the company contributed to the recovery of local economy by maintaining its workers employed, thus providing stability for their families. The company has also implemented an eco-friendly building model: on the one hand, it disposed of the rubble of its plant and of the surrounding constructions, thus proving its committment to the needs of the local institutions; on the other hand, UNIMER chose the latest industrial equipment and technologies in compliance with health, safety and anti-seismic legislation.

UNIMER’s Corporate Social Responsibility also extends to the well-being of farmers and to crop safety. UNIMER fertilizers are guaranteed pathogen-free, safe and reliable through a sanitizing heat treatment of one hour at 70°C, as required by the law.

The final goal is to guarantee safe and genuine food.
